Criminal Court
Jefferson County Pennsylvania

The prosecution of criminal cases through the Court of Common Pleas is the primary responsibility of the District Attorney's Office because a violation of the criminal law is considered an offense against the community. An individual, known as the defendant, can be charged with a felony, a misdemeanor or a summary offense. Once a case is bound over to court after a preliminary hearing at the District Justice Office, it is placed on a scheduled track. The District Attorney handles the prosecution of the case through its various stages, including arraignment, criminal conferences, hearing on pretrial motions and the actual trial of the case. The District Attorney thereafter represents the Commonwealth in any post-trial proceedings, including the sentencing of the defendant and any appeals.
