Juvenile Probation and Parole Services
of Jefferson Count Pennsylvania

The following are the major duties of the Juvenile Probation and Parole Department:

Court Processing: If the case requires a hearing (e.g. the child committed a delinquent act that rises to the level of a felony offense), the Juvenile Probation Department assists in preparing the case for Court by reporting findings, making recommendations and conducting any additional investigations ordered by the Judge.

Pre-Disposition Investigation: The Juvenile Probation Department will promptly respond to youth cited for committing delinquent acts. An initial investigation shall be conducted to determine whether it is in the interest of public safety and accountability to require that the case be handled in Juvenile Court or supervised by Juvenile Probation.

Emergency Services: If a police department has detained a youth alleged to have committed a delinquent act who requires secure detention or shelter placement, the Juvenile Probation Department shall take the youth into custody.

Supervision: If a juvenile is placed on probation, it is the responsibility of the Juvenile Probation Department to enforce the conditions of supervision.

Referral Services: It is the responsibility of the Juvenile Probation and Parole Department to make appropriate referrals to meet the needs of youth under supervision.

Restitution Collection: It is the responsibility of Juvenile Probation to ensure that restitution is paid to the satisfaction of the victim.

Community-Based Probation: The community-based probation officer develops and maintains effective working relationships with community leaders, law enforcement, victim services, businesses, schools and churches. Strengths, interests, and skill of juveniles under supervision are assessed and resources are provided to build on these qualities.

Intensive Probation: The intensive probation officer supervises adjudicated delinquents at risk of out of home placements.

Electronic Monitoring: Probation officers track the whereabouts of adjudicated delinquents on house arrest.

Placement: Juvenile Probation monitors the progress of delinquents who are placed.

Parole: Upon release from placement, delinquents are monitored to ensure that they are crime-free.
