Minor Judiciary
of Jefferson County Pennsylvania

The first level of the county court system is the court of the district justice. The geographic area over which a particular district justice presides is known as a magisterial district and there are three such districts in Jefferson County. District Justices have jurisdiction in both criminal and civil matters. Civil jurisdiction for District Justices is $8,000.00. District Justices shall complete a course of training and instruction in the duties of their respective offices and pass an examination and be certified by the Administrative Office of PA Courts prior to assuming office. Each year thereafter they shall complete a continuing education program equivalent to not less than 32 hours. As officers of the Pennsylvania Unified Judicial System they may perform marriage ceremonies if they choose, and they have the authority to administer oaths.
